Dowry system in our culture

Islam teaches that the dowry should be reduced and made simple, and that this is in the interests of both the husband and the wife. As the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said : "The best of marriage is that which is made easiest." Narrated by Ibn Hibbaan, classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami', 3300.

Islam has not strictly prohibited dowry but it has said that dowry should be given according to financial conditions. Prophet (P.B.U.H) himself gave Abu Bakr some money and asked him to accompany Bilal and Salman, (or Ammar Ibn Yasir) to buy some household necessities for Fatima's house. The Prophet said to Abu Bakr: "Buy some appropriate household necessities for my daughter with this money." Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) gave 63 Durhams to Hazrat Abu Bakr and he brought the household items like bed sheets, curtains, utensils, cloths, rugs and other like things. When Abu Bakr and the other companions had bought the above-mentioned articles, they carried them to Um Salama's house. When the Prophet saw them, he started kissing every article and supplicated to Allah, saying: "O Allah, bless them! For they are people who the majority of their belongings are made of natural materials."
